THE BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY AND THE MIDDLE KINGDOM: AMERICA AND CHINA, 1776 TO THE PRESENT
In my second book, The Beautiful Country and the Middle Kingdom: America and China, 1776 to the Present, I take on the broad sweep of U.S.-China relations. As the relationship was made by people, I focus on the stories that have united and divided these two great nations. It’s a narrative— and oftentimes revisionist—history that challenges a lot of preconceived notions. An example would be the argument that if only the United States had reached out to Chairman Mao Zedong in the 1940s, Washington would not have had a Cold War with China. the book also rewrites the story of the christian missionary experience in China, showing that while, of course, the missionaries had their cultural imperialist side, they also contributed much to china, bringing western scientific education, fighting foot-binding and opening china’s first Great newspapers.
Winner of the Council on Foreign Relations’ Arthur Ross Prize for the best book in 2017.
